Press Release

Callicoon Fine Arts is pleased to present sculptures by Ruby Sky Stiler. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, July 17th, from 5 to 7pm. The gallery is located at 27 Lower Main Street, Upstairs, in Callicoon, NY.

Ruby Sky Stiler's sculptural forms piece together disparate classical iconographies. At first glance, the figures appear to be simulacrums of the remnants of Classical Athens. However, after closer inspection, her works evince their subtly inventive form and content. What appears to be a sculptural unity produced by a homogeneous culture is really a conflation of images and objects that span centuries produced by disparate societies. Stiler's pieces reveal sculpture to be an interpretive act and underscore the fact that there is no single truth about the past and its meaning. Although she quotes from the classical nude, Stiler's work resists the universality assumed by Western art history. In her vision, there is a makeshift logic to the way the fragments are piled together to create a new and not quite reliable whole.

Ruby Sky Stiler (b.1979) received her MFA from Yale. Her work has been shown internationally at galleries including Nicelle Beauchene, NY, Sandroni Rey, Los Angeles, and Annarumma 404, Naples, Italy. Upcoming exhibitions include solo projects at The Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, OR, and The Suburban, Chicago, as well as the Emerging Artist Fellowship Exhibition at Socrates Sculpture Park, NY. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
